ABOUT THE NEW ZEALAND JAZZ FOUNDATION
1. The New Zealand Jazz Foundation (NZJF) is a non-profit making organisation formed in 1980 to promote the interests and appreciation of jazz and related music throughout New Zealand.
2. Since its inception in 1980, the NZJF has been operating as an incorporated society governed by a constitution. That organisation structure had become unwieldy and outdated. A resolution passed at the 2007 NZJF Annual Meeting changed the status of of the Foundation to a Charitable Trust. The NZJF remains a non profit making organisation under its changed status.
3. The objects of the Trust are:
(a) to educate the public in relation to jazz music by organising and promoting
(i) jazz performances and
(ii) jazz workshopsand other educational events;
(b) to promote the appreciation and/or teaching of jazz music and
(c) to do anything which advances these objects
(d) The Trust's objects shall only be carried out in and to benefit people in New Zealand.
The Trustees may carry out activities outside New Zealand to promote the Trust or the Trust's
activities, but only if they beleive that such activities will be for the ultimate benefit of the
people of New Zealand.
4. Since its inception, the NZJF has concentrated its activities around jazz performances and jazz workshops. This has manifested itself in the annual selection of a New Zealand High Schools' Jazz Orchestra and the New Zealand Youth Jazz Orchestra (selection limited to those up to 23 years of age). These orchestras are selected by audition New Zealand wide although the New Zealand Youth Jazz Orchestra has not been assembled in the last two years through lack of sponsorship finance. Generally the orchestras are in rehearsal for 4 days before undertaking concert tours. Musical Directors are appointed either within New Zealand or from overseas. The NZJF holds a National High Schools' Jazz Workshop in January of each year in Wellington. Further details on the Workshop and the New Zealand High Schools' Jazz Orchestra are available elsewhere in the website.
